Aqeeqah for Twins: Islamic Rules for Twin Boys, Girls & Mixed Multiples

Welcoming twins or multiple births into the family comes with doubled blessings but unique questions about the Sunnah.

Do you need one goat for your two children?

Can you sacrifice for one of them first?

What if you have a boy and a girl?

Here are the Islamic rulings about Aqiqah (Aqeeqah) for twins.

---

Does One Animal Suffice for Both of My Twins?

No, you will need separate animals for each of your children.

The reason is that every child is an individual with an individual sunnah.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"Every child is held in pledge for his Aqeeqah.> — (Sunan an-Nasa'i)

So each one has to have something sacrificed on their behalf.

---

How Many Goats Do I Need for My Twin Babies?

The sunnah of Aqeeqah depends on the genders of your newborns.

| Twin Combination | Recommended Number of Goats |

| Twin Boys (Two Boys) | 4 Goats (2 goats per boy) |

| Twin Girls (Two Girls) | 2 Goats (1 goat per girl) |

| Mixed Twins (One Boy + One Girl) | 3 Goats (2 for the boy, 1 for the girl) |

What If I Can't Afford 4 Goats For My Twin Boys?

The Islamic rulings are easy on the parents.

If you're having trouble managing financially with two children, you do not have to sacrifice two rams or goats at once.

Instead, choose from these options:

1. One Goat per Boy (2 Goats Total): According to many classical scholars, including the Maliki school, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed one ram for Hasan and one ram for Husayn ﷺ when they were born. This shows us that it's completely sufficient to sacrifice one goat for each of your children.

2. Sacrifice for one child on the 7th day and for the other when you can afford it. So you could slaughter for one of your sons on the 7th day, and then for the second later on.

---

Can I Sacrifice Both of My Children's Animals on the Same Day?

Yes, in fact, it's most virtuous to sacrifice them on the same 7th day.

But you must make sure to declare different intentions when slaughtering (Niyyah).

For your first animal, say, "This is for [child's full name + father's full name]."

For your second animal, say, "This is for [second child's full name + father's full name]."
