Aqiqah refers to the sacrifice of a livestock animal (goat or sheep) in gratitude for the birth of a child. Across the four major schools of thought (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali), performing an Akikah is classified as Sunnah Mu’akkadah. While not strictly fard (obligatory), it carries immense spiritual reward and safeguards the newborn.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) established this foundational tradition:
"Every child is in pledge for his Aqiqah, which should be slaughtered for him on the seventh day, and he should be shaved and given a name."
— (Sunan Abu Dawood 2838, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1522)

Best Timing: 7th day of birth (or 14th, 21st, or whenever feasible)
Scheduled exactly on your requested Sunnah date
1. Set the Sincere Intention (Niyyah)
The father or guardian makes the intention of sacrificing the animal for the child for the sake of Allah. During slaughter, the invocation « بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ » (Bismillah, Allahu Akbar) must be recited.
2. Shave the Infant’s Hair (Tahleeq)
On the 7th day, it is Sunnah to shave the infant's head completely as part of the Akikah rites. This cleanses the scalp and stimulates healthy hair follicle development.
3. Give Charity in Silver (Sadaqah)
Weigh the shaved hair on a precision scale and donate the monetary equivalent of its weight in silver to the poor and needy as charitable Sadaqah.
4. Name the Child (Tasmiyah)
Select a good, meaningful Islamic name on or before the 7th day. The Prophet (ﷺ) encouraged names that reflect devotion to Allah, such as Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman, or names of the Prophets and righteous companions.
5. Distribute the Aqeeqah Meat
Divide the meat into three portions:
One-third for the family and parents.
One-third as gifts for extended family, friends, and neighbors.
One-third as charity for the poor, orphans, and underprivileged.
Serving the Aqiqah meat cooked in a shared gathering is highly recommended and aligns with Prophetic hospitality.
