What is Aqeeqah in Islam? Complete Guide for Parents

Aqeeqah is a beautiful Sunnah performed after the birth of a child. This guide explains its meaning, rules, and how parents in Pakistan and abroad can arrange it easily.

What is Aqeeqah in Islam — a Sunnah of our beloved Prophet ﷺ

What is Aqeeqah?

Aqeeqah (also spelled Aqiqah) is the Islamic practice of sacrificing an animal after the birth of a child. It is a way to express gratitude to Allah, announce the child's arrival, and share blessings with others.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Every child is held in pledge by his Aqeeqah, which should be sacrificed for him on the seventh day.

Why is Aqeeqah performed?

  • To thank Allah for the blessing of a child
  • To announce the birth and share joy with family and community
  • To distribute meat to those in need
  • To follow the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

How many goats for Aqeeqah?

When should Aqeeqah be done?

The recommended time is the 7th day after birth. If that is not possible, it can be performed later — there is no fixed expiry, but sooner is better.

What happens to the meat?

Traditionally, meat is:

  • Cooked and shared with family and friends
  • Distributed to needy families

For overseas clients, meat is distributed locally in Karachi to deserving Muslim families.
